Elaine was looking over her thesis on plants for her 9th grade science
class.
Her bright green eyes scanned the computer screen, making sure that her
thesis made sense. She impatiently flicked her auburn hair out of her eyes
with a slim finger.
Her small black radio was blaring some nonsense about muntancy in the US.
Elaine didn’t get why everyone was so afraid. She thought that powers of
that intensity were kinda cool.
She slipped off into dreamland for a second, wondering what it would be like
to have powers like that.
She grinned and shook herself out of her la-la land. Still grinning to
herself, she went into the bathroom.
And looked into the mirror.
And backed up into the wall.
And screamed.
The mirror image mimicked her precisely. Only there had to be something
wrong with her mirror. In the mirror, Lana’s eyes were a solid green.
It had been four months since that date.
Lana had run as fast and far as she could. She had discovered that she had
the power to make plants grow really fast and tall.
She had been using her power on and off, until she could control it.
Professor Xavier had found her living in the backwoods of Oregon. She had
been making trees and plants that bore fruit or vegetables grow. Then she
had either picked the edible stuff or left it for animals to kill.
Xavier had found her and insisted upon bringing her back to his school for
mutants. So she had decided, why not? Can’t hurt any. Here she was, brand
new.
And somehow, she knew that things were going to change. She now had the
courage to look at herself in the mirror. She also had the courage to do
other things.
“AHHHHH!!!!!! Elaine!!!! Come get this off my pillow RIGHT NOW!!!!! You
know that I’m allergic to daisies!!!!! ACHOOOO!!!!!!!”
Yup. A lot different. And that's how she liked it. With a pansy like Scott
to bug, of course.
